Chicago community group, Native Sons, has made a plea to the city's gangs to refrain from engaging in gunfights during daylight hours.
The Rogers Park-based organization hopes that by implementing this measure, known as "The People's Ordinance," the safety of ordinary citizens can be improved in a city plagued by crime.
Tatiana Atkins, co-founder of Native Sons, emphasized the need to address the city's gun violence problem strategically and gradually. She stated, "Things didn't become this way overnight, and change won't happen overnight." The proposed ordinance not only restricts the time for gunfights but also calls for an end to the glorification of gangsters and the practice of gangsters trying to integrate with law-abiding citizens, which puts everyone at risk.
Atkins argued that by implementing time limits, people would be more aware of the increased risk of being shot by an unknown assailant during certain hours. This awareness could lead to a decrease in people being out and about during those times and a greater focus on supervising children. She stressed the urgency of the situation, highlighting the victims of gun violence, including children, pregnant women, and fathers, and stating, "This shouldn't be happening."
While Native Sons has not sought legislative action from elected officials, Atkins explained that the movement would gain momentum through social media and media coverage. She claimed to have already reached out to various gang members and received more positive feedback than negative.
"We live in a trend society," Atkins said. "The more media, government officials, and community residents believe in this ordinance and stand behind it, the more likely the people will align with the ordinance."
The call for gangs to refrain from gunfights during daylight hours comes as Chicago experiences a surge in shootings attributed to gang violence. Rival gangs operate at all times of the day, contributing to the city's crime problem. Native Sons hopes that their proposal will alleviate the fear of innocent bystanders getting caught in the crossfire.
The organization acknowledges that completely ending gun violence may not be a realistic goal. However, by mitigating the risk that shooters pose to ordinary citizens, Native Sons aims to make a significant impact on the safety of the community.
As the movement gains traction through social media and media coverage, Native Sons remains optimistic about its potential to bring about change. By urging gangs to adhere to "The People's Ordinance," the organization hopes to create a safer environment for all residents of Chicago.
