Meta's Ultimatum: Embrace The Office 3 Days A Week Or Face The Chop

Meta, the tech giant led by CEO and Founder Mark Zuckerberg, has issued a stern warning to its employees: adhere to the new three-day-per-week in-office work mandate or face termination.

This directive was initially announced in June, with the implementation date set for September 5.

In an internal email, Meta's Head of People, Lori Goler, outlined the new policy. "Beginning September 5, people assigned to an office will need to spend at least 3 days per week in person to foster healthy relationships and strong collaboration, she wrote.

Goler further explained that managers would be monitoring employee compliance with the new policy on a monthly basis. The email, which was later obtained by Insider, stated, "repeated violations may result in disciplinary action, up to and including a performance rating drop and, ultimately, termination."

This shift in work policy is part of Zuckerberg's "Year of Efficiency" initiative. In March, Zuckerberg announced that Meta would be reducing its workforce by approximately 10,000 employees, leaving 5,000 open roles by the end of 2023.

The company is moving away from a fully remote work model, with only a few exceptions. New employees will only be eligible for remote work after demonstrating positive performance for 18 months. Furthermore, remote employees will be restricted from visiting the office more than four days every two months, unless there is a clear business reason.

A spokesman for Meta told Insider, "We believe that distributed work will continue to be important in the future, particularly as our technology improves." He added, "In the near-term, our in-person focus is designed to support a strong, valuable experience for our people who have chosen to work from the office. We're being thoughtful and intentional about where we invest in remote work."

The internal email emphasized that the key to making these new policies "fair and effective" is to ensure "accountability" is at the heart of the process.
