Alec Baldwin was the center of a massive controversy when an accidental shooting on the set of Rust left Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, dead.
The bullet was supposed to be fake, but live ammunition was in the prop gun.
NY Post reports, New Mexico prosecutors will charge Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed with two federal counts of involuntary manslaughter over the death of Hutchins on the Rust film set in October 2021, when a real bullet [was] loaded into a prop gun.
Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed arent the only ones in hot water. David Halls was the assistant director on the set. Hes the one that handed the loaded gun to Baldwin. However, Halls decided to take a misdemeanor charge and a plea deal.
According to the NY Post, If any of these three people Alec Baldwin, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, or David Halls had done their job, Halyna Hutchins would be alive today. Its that simple, special prosecutor Andrea Reeb said.
The jury will decide the charges for the two who did not accept the plea deal. The first possible charge is involuntary manslaughter, with a maximum sentence of 18 months. However, the second charge they could be found guilty of is involuntary manslaughter in commissioning a lawful act, with a mandatory five-year sentence. That means theyll be in prison for five years if convicted of this charge.
However, Alec Baldwins lawyer, Luke Nikas, says the charges are crap. According to Nikas, Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe there was a live bullet in the gun or anywhere on the movie set. He relied on the professionals with whom he worked, who assured him the gun did not have live rounds. We will fight these charges, and we will win.
On the other hand, Baldwin also says that he never pulled the trigger and that the gun went off accidentally. An investigation reveals that this gun couldnt go off without him pulling the trigger.
