A horrifying video has captured the devastating moment when a house in Plum Borough, western Pennsylvania, was obliterated, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including a 38-year-old man and his 12-year-old son.
The explosion, which occurred on Rustic Ridge Drive, was caught on a doorbell camera and shows the house engulfed in a massive fireball. The cause of the blast is currently under investigation, with Allegheny County officials stating that it could take several months to determine.
Plum Police Chief Lanny Conley confirmed that the explosion in the Rustic Ridge Estates neighborhood claimed the lives of four adults and one child. Two of the deceased victims have been identified as Casey Clontz and his son, Keegan. The incident also resulted in the destruction of at least two other homes, while around a dozen others sustained damage.
According to the family, Casey and Keegan, who resided on nearby Brookside Drive, were present at 141 Rustic Ridge Drive when the explosion occurred. Although it remains unclear why they were at the house, the family mentioned that Casey had a close relationship with the neighbors. Casey, an employee of Peoples Gas, was described as an enthusiastic Steelers fan and a devoted father who supported his son's involvement in football and gymnastics. Keegan, a member of the Plum Mustangs youth football team, was about to start junior high.
The family released a statement expressing their grief and the impact Casey and Keegan had on their loved ones and the community. They described the father and son as happiest when spending time at the lake with their extended family and friends, engaging in activities such as swimming, boating, and cruising in their golf cart.
The identities of the three other victims have not yet been disclosed. Of the individuals injured in the blast, two have been discharged from the hospital, while one remains in critical condition. Steve Imbarlina, assistant chief of Allegheny County Emergency Services, emphasized that the cause of the explosion is still under investigation and that extensive forensic testing will be required to determine the exact circumstances. He anticipates that the investigation could last for months, if not years.
Mike Huwar, president of Peoples Gas, stated that his crews arrived in the neighborhood within 15 minutes of the blast. They immediately conducted thorough checks for gas leaks, including smell tests and underground and airborne gas testing. Huwar confirmed that their system was functioning as intended and that consistent pressure was maintained at their regulation stations.
Residents of the neighborhood are demanding answers regarding the tragic incident. Justin Newman, a neighbor, expressed his concern and the need for clarity, stating that similar incidents have occurred in Plum before. He emphasized the importance of understanding why these events are happening and stressed the necessity of finding answers for the affected families and the community.
Governor Josh Shapiro conveyed his condolences for the victims and their families, expressing his sorrow over the tragedy. He and his wife, Lori, offered their prayers and gratitude to the first responders who bravely risked their lives to save others. Governor Shapiro concluded by stating that the memories of the five Pennsylvanians who lost their lives will forever be cherished.
