New York-based Real Kosher Ice Cream has initiated a recall of its Soft Serve On The Go ice cream cups across 19 states and the District of Columbia, due to potential contamination with Listeria.
The announcement was made via an alert on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website on Wednesday.
The recall encompasses all flavors of the Soft Serve On The Go cups produced on or before August 4. The product, available in six different flavors, is packaged in 8-ounce containers, as stated in the alert.
The decision to recall was triggered by two reported cases of illness, one each in New York and Pennsylvania, which resulted in hospitalization. One of the individuals fell ill after consuming a Soft Serve On The Go cup, which subsequently tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, as confirmed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
Listeriosis, an infection caused by the ingestion of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, leads to approximately 260 deaths each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The infection is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, adults over 65, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
As of Wednesday, no deaths have been linked to the recalled ice cream products, the alert confirmed.
The recalled products may have been purchased from canteens, grocery stores, or convenience stores in a number of states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
The FDA alert strongly advises against consuming the recalled product, recommending instead that consumers dispose of the Soft Serve On The Go cups or return them to the place of purchase.
In a statement on its website, Real Kosher Ice Cream emphasized that the recall was initiated out of concern for customer safety, stating, "our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our customers."
The company also clarified that the Soft Serve On The Go Cups are produced in a dedicated facility and no other products are affected by this recall.
Both the FDA and Real Kosher Ice Cream are currently investigating the matter, and production and distribution of the Soft Serve On The Go cups have been halted in the meantime, as per the recall alert.
