Democratic congressional candidate Aditya Pai has clarified that he will not be dropping out of the race for California's 45th District, despite a letter sent by his campaign suggesting otherwise.
In an email published on Twitter, Pai stated that he was suspending his campaign due to a "lack of joy." However, he later explained that the letter was meant as an "emotional processing exercise" and was not intended for public distribution.
Pai, a 31-year-old attorney and self-proclaimed lifelong Democrat, announced his candidacy on April 10. In his campaign launch video, he emphasized his commitment to bolstering opportunity for all and supporting small businesses. Other policy platforms highlighted on his campaign website include reproductive rights, immigration reform, and affordable housing.
The 45th District is currently represented by GOP Rep. Michelle Steele, who was elected in the 2022 midterms. Steele defeated her Democratic opponent by nearly five points, according to Ballotpedia. Prior to her current position, she served California's 48th Congressional District, winning the seat in 2020.
Pai is one of four declared Democratic candidates competing for the nomination in the 45th District. The other candidates include Jimmy Pham, Kim Nguyen, and Cheyenne Hunt. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has identified Steele's seat as one of their targeted races for 2024, considering it to be competitive due to its swing district status or Republican representation.
In his clarification, Pai acknowledged the challenges of running for office, describing it as "hard and sometimes painful." However, he made it clear that he remains committed to his campaign and will continue to vie for the seat.
