A tragic incident unfolded near a tavern on U.S. Highway 31 in Atmore, Alabama, on Saturday night, resulting in the death of a woman and a man.
According to police reports, 24-year-old Hannah Martin was crossing the highway to reach the Tavern Sports Bar when she was struck by a 2005 Chevy Tahoe driven by 45-year-old Kenneth Harrison. Despite efforts to save her life, Martin was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.
The situation took a violent turn when Harrison pulled his truck into the parking lot of the tavern. An unknown number of tavern patrons and bystanders allegedly assaulted Harrison, beating him so severely that he had to be airlifted to a local trauma center. Tragically, Harrison succumbed to his injuries while on life support.
State troopers are currently investigating both incidents, seeking to uncover the full details surrounding this harrowing chain of events. This is not the first time Harrison has been involved in a violent altercation resulting in death. In 2011, he was convicted of beating a man named Sanford Lee Ledbetter to death. Ledbetter had been missing since 2005, and his skeletal remains were discovered a year later near Elberta's M&M Mud Bog arena.
It took four years to identify the remains as Ledbetter's, leading to Harrison being charged with his murder. Harrison ultimately confessed to the crime and pleaded guilty to manslaughter, receiving a 15-year prison sentence, which was reduced due to time already served during the trial.
The Atmore Police Department is actively reviewing security footage and conducting interviews with bystanders who were present at the Tavern Sports Bar during the fatal incident.
As the investigation progresses, authorities hope to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragic event and bring closure to the families affected by these senseless acts of violence.
