At the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sam Smith and transgender vocalist Kim Petras performed an outright satanic rendition of their hit song Unholy.
Smith and Petras were presented with a Grammy for Unholy in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category.
Kim Petras and Sam Smith have made history by becoming the first transgender and nonbinary artists to receive a Grammy in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, and the two 'Unholy' singers went on to acknowledge the 'incredible transgender legends' who preceded them in breaking down these doors.
When inquiring about the spirited performance post-show, Petras disclosed that it was motivated by their lack of acceptance in religious circles.
Growing up, Petras questioned religion and yearned to be a part of it, but slowly understood it did not want to include her. As a result, the song was created to reflect the experience of not being able to choose religion and living a life that others may not accept. She referred to this as being the "hellkeeper Kim."
To add to the strangeness of the evening, Jill Biden made a surprise appearance at the end of the show to hand out the first Grammy in the category of Song for Social Change. The winner, Shervin Hajipour, is a young Iranian whose song Baraye has become an anthem for womens rights protests.
