A recent poll conducted by NHJournal/co-efficient has revealed that former President Donald Trump continues to enjoy strong support and loyalty from Republican voters in New Hampshire, despite facing a series of indictments.
The survey found that 43 percent of respondents expressed their support for Trump, far surpassing any other potential candidate. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie both garnered only nine percent support, tying for second place.
The poll also highlighted the unwavering loyalty of GOP voters towards Trump, with 57 percent holding a favorable view of the former President. In relation to the events of January 6, only 25 percent of Republican voters believe that Trump is "guilty," while 40 percent are uncertain if any laws were broken but believe he is being prosecuted solely because of his identity as Donald Trump. Furthermore, 35 percent of respondents stated that Trump "did not do anything wrong and should not be punished."
Interestingly, even if Trump were to face punishment, it would not deter New Hampshire Republicans from supporting him. The survey revealed that 62 percent of respondents would still vote for Trump in the presidential election, even if he were convicted of a felony prior to the general election. Additionally, 57 percent of respondents stated that they would vote for Trump even if he were serving time in prison during the 2024 general election.
Ryan Munce, CEO of co-efficient, expressed his astonishment at the level of loyalty Trump commands among his supporters, stating, "As a pollster, I wonder if there is any other political figure in America who could generate this level of loyalty. It will be difficult for any Republican to peel away these voters."
The survey, conducted from August 5-7, 2023, included 862 likely Republican primary voters and has a margin of error of +/- 3.33 percent. The release of the poll coincided with Trump's arraignment in Washington, D.C., for his third indictment in recent months, this time related to the events of January 6.
In response to his court appearance, Trump expressed his dismay, describing it as a "very sad day for America." He further claimed that the charges against him were a form of political persecution, stating, "This is a persecution of a political opponent. This was never supposed to happen in America."
The poll results indicate that Trump's popularity among Republican voters in New Hampshire remains strong, despite the legal challenges he faces. It remains to be seen how this loyalty will impact the political landscape moving forward, as potential Republican candidates may find it challenging to sway these dedicated Trump supporters.
