A teenager has been arrested in San Antonio, Texas, after allegedly making threats to carry out a mass shooting similar to the Uvalde tragedy.
Nathan Cruz, 17, is facing charges of making a terroristic threat to the public and to a family member. The arrest came after Cruz's mother reported to the police that he had expressed his desire to "do the same thing" as Salvador Ramos, the Uvalde mass shooter.
She also revealed that Cruz had threatened to shoot his sister in the head and had made a statement about shooting up the school, which is located across the street from their family home. The mother further disclosed that she overheard Cruz attempting to acquire an AR-15 through an illegal private sale during a phone conversation earlier that day.
Cruz's mother expressed heightened concern due to his current probation status and his intoxication at the time of the threats. Following his arrest, Cruz was taken to Bexar County Jail, where his bond was set at $160,000. He denied making any threats.
The Uvalde mass shooting occurred over a year ago when Salvador Ramos shot his grandmother before carrying out a deadly attack at Robb Elementary School, claiming the lives of 19 children and two adults. The incident sparked criticism of the first responders for their delayed response, allowing Ramos to enter the school and carry out the massacre. Ultimately, a law enforcement officer shot and killed Ramos, but not before he had caused significant harm.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, family members of Ramos have expressed remorse and questioned what could have been done to prevent the horrific event. Ramos' father even went so far as to say, "He should've just killed me... instead of doing something like that to someone."
