According to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., President Biden's negative economic polling can be attributed to a "hangover" from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview with CNN host Fredricka Whitfield, Schultz addressed a CNN poll that revealed 51% of Americans believe the economy is worsening.
Schultz argued that President Biden, like his predecessor President Obama, inherited a dire situation from the mishandling of the pandemic by former President Trump. She commended Biden for saving millions of jobs and preventing small businesses from going under. Schultz stated that the administration has made significant progress in turning around the economy, but acknowledged that the impact of these efforts will take time to fully materialize.
She attributed the negative polling to the lingering effects of the pandemic and emphasized the need for effective communication to ensure that the public understands the administration's accomplishments. Schultz also addressed the placement of new signage by the White House next to infrastructure projects, which aims to give President Biden credit for these initiatives. She compared this strategy to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act during the Obama years, highlighting the importance of visible communication to showcase the investments being made and the resulting job creation.
A Fox News Poll conducted in late June found that 76% of voters believe the economy is in poor or fair shape, while 68% expressed dissatisfaction with the country's current state. Schultz acknowledged that President Biden's numbers are improving overall but stressed the importance of continued communication by Democrats.
In recent weeks, the White House and President Biden have been promoting "Bidenomics" to highlight the administration's economic policies in response to negative polling. During a speech in Chicago at the end of June, President Biden emphasized the vision of an economy that benefits the middle class and lower-income individuals, contrasting it with the failed theory of trickle-down economics.
According to CNN's poll, President Biden's overall approval rating stands at 41%, with a lower rating of 37% for his handling of the economy. The poll was conducted from July 1 through July 31.
