Republican Representative Dan Bishop has announced his intention to run for the position of North Carolina state attorney general.
The move has garnered support from fellow GOP members, including Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, who described Bishop as "a fighter." The Club for Growth PAC has also endorsed Bishop for the role, with its president, David McIntosh, stating that Bishop is the conservative champion that North Carolina deserves. McIntosh praised Bishop's support for free markets, school choice, and his opposition to the Biden Administration's radical agenda.
The news of Bishop's candidacy has been met with mixed emotions within the Republican Party. Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado expressed sadness at the prospect of losing Bishop as a conservative figure in the House but showed her support for his pursuit of the attorney general role. Boebert took to Twitter, stating, "I am sad to hear we're losing @JDanBishop in the House, truly one of our greatest! I am, however, THRILLED for the people of North Carolina in knowing that they'll get a chance to elect an INCREDIBLE Attorney General!"
Bishop, who has served as a member of Congress for just under four years since September 2019, has been involved in significant political battles during his tenure. Earlier this year, he was one of the House Republicans who participated in the House speakership fight. Notably, Bishop voted for a candidate other than Kevin McCarthy in the first 11 rounds of balloting before ultimately switching his vote to support McCarthy in the subsequent rounds.
With his experience and conservative values, Bishop's entry into the race for North Carolina state attorney general is expected to bring a fresh perspective and strong advocacy for conservative principles. As the campaign unfolds, voters will have the opportunity to evaluate Bishop's qualifications and vision for the role.
