A video of a self-proclaimed "hardcore Trump supporter" praising Florida Governor Ron DeSantis during one of his recent campaign stops has gone viral on social media.
The woman's remarks, amplified by DeSantis' campaign, were made after the 2024 Republican presidential hopeful spoke to a group of voters in Tega Cay, South Carolina, on Monday.
In the clip, the unidentified woman expressed her admiration for President Trump and her initial hesitation in considering another candidate. She stated, "I'm a very hardcore Trump supporter he made me stop and think a minute. Because my love for President Trump comes from all the despair of all the things he's been through, he has served as our president of the United States, and he did a good job."
She went on to explain that while her emotions and love for Trump initially guided her decision-making, she now believes that the upcoming vote is crucial for the country's future. She commended DeSantis for his performance as governor, stating, "This is the most important vote that we're gonna have, and I have to think more with my mind and what's best for this country. And you did an excellent job, and I certainly appreciate it."
DeSantis responded to the woman's remarks with gratitude, saying, "God bless you. Thank you." He acknowledged the accomplishments of President Trump and criticized the treatment he received, particularly regarding the Russia collusion allegations. However, DeSantis emphasized the need to focus on the future and address the weaponization of government. He pledged to stand up for the people, defend the constitution, and restore the country to its founding principles.
The video, which has garnered over 1.2 million views on Twitter, quickly gained traction among DeSantis supporters in the presidential race. One attendee of the South Carolina event, who claimed to have witnessed the exchange firsthand, tweeted, "You can see the back of my head in this video I was sitting right there. This was a pivotal moment, and she was absolutely correct."
Despite the praise the video received, some skeptics suggested that the interaction between DeSantis and the woman was staged or pre-scripted. One pro-Trump Republican operative, Alex Bruesewitz, dismissed it as "staged" in a response on Twitter. Another user tweeted, "Stop what you are doing and watch this preselected, pre-scripted question and answer."
In the polls, DeSantis currently ranks second, trailing behind Trump by double digits but leading the rest of the GOP presidential contenders, who are polling in the single digits.
