A Republican from Florida, Matt Gaetz, has been introduced to say goodbye to the ATF.
After the ATF issued a controversial ruling, he was done with the entire organization.
According to Fox News, The ATF issued its final rule Friday that will treat guns with stabilizing accessories like short-barreled rifles, which require a federal license to own under the National Firearms Act.
Attorney General Merrick Garland loves the idea because he says its safer for the public. However, Gaetz makes a valid point as well. He points out that there are disabled people that have to use stabilizing braces to fire a gun. Some have to use them to be able to shoot a gun with one hand. He says that the law isnt fair to them. He said its the final straw for the ATF, which stands for Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Thats why he introduced the Abolish the ATF Act. During a phone interview, he pointed out there are a lot of disabled veterans in his district. Per Fox News, he said, The recent actions from the ATF essentially allow them to make case-by-case determinations on whether a pistol with a stabilizing brace is legal or an unlawful, sawed-off shotgun.
He didnt stop there. Gaetz continued to point out that this new law would turn outstanding citizens into felons simply because they are disabled. However, the ATF claims this law wont impact people with disabilities. Fox News says, According to the ATF, the new rule does not affect stabilizing braces that are objectively designed and intended as a stabilizing brace for use by individuals with disabilities, and not for shouldering the weapon as a rifle.
The bill is already set to go before the judiciary committee. No other Republicans are backing the bill yet, but Gaetz says there is a lot of support for the bill.
