Detroit Police Commissioner Bryan Ferguson has resigned from his position after being caught with a prostitute in his vehicle.
Ferguson, who represented District 1 and previously served on the city's police oversight board, was cited for "indecent and obscene conduct" by undercover members of the Wayne County Sheriffs Department.
The incident occurred around 7:15 am on Wednesday near Shaefer Highway and Schoolcraft Road. Officers claimed they witnessed Ferguson stop his vehicle, speak with a known prostitute, and then let her into his car before driving to the scene of the alleged crime. When approached by officers, Ferguson identified himself and asked for special treatment, but was instead given a citation and had his vehicle towed.
"A title or position doesn't make them above the law," said Capt. Jason Bates.
Ferguson, however, maintains that the situation was a "big misunderstanding." He claimed that the woman jumped into his passenger seat when he pulled over to investigate a noise in his trunk. According to Ferguson, he yelled at her to get out of his truck, but she pleaded for help, saying that someone was going to kill her. Despite his claims, District 4 Police Commissioner dismissed Ferguson's story as "a made-up story," stating that people don't just jump into someone's car.
In a statement announcing his resignation, Ferguson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the residents of Detroit in police oversight. He cited the best interests of his family and the board as the reasons for his decision to step down. Ferguson acknowledged that explaining the situation to his wife would be difficult.
