House Republicans are preparing to release a scathing report accusing Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of violating immigration law through the implementation of the Biden administration's open-border policies.
The report, which is estimated to be around 111 pages long, is expected to detail the initial findings of the Homeland Security Committee's inquiry into Mayorkas.
According to Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.), the report will highlight various issues, including allegations of lying to Congress and the use of the CBP One app, which critics argue is a means to bypass Congress and grant automatic mass parole.
Green emphasized that these actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the separation of powers and the Constitution.
One of the key accusations against Mayorkas is that he lied to Congress when he claimed that the Department of Homeland Security had "operational control over the border." Additionally, Mayorkas supported the creation of the CBP One app, which allows asylum seekers to schedule appointments to enter the United States.
Green has privately informed donors that he intends to build an impeachment case against Mayorkas. However, previous attempts to impeach the Homeland Security Secretary have failed due to a lack of sufficient votes.
Mayorkas has been a frequent target of criticism from congressional Republicans who are dissatisfied with the conditions at the border, which have seen a significant increase in migrant arrivals during the Biden administration.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has also called for Mayorkas's resignation and has floated the idea of impeachment. The upcoming report is expected to discuss allegations of dereliction of duty, including Mayorkas's admission that he did not understand the strategies employed by drug cartels during testimony in Congress.
Mayorkas has largely dismissed the talk of impeachment, stating that he is focused on the work at hand, such as addressing the challenges posed by the southern border, cyber threats, and extreme weather events.
However, Green has indicated that the investigation will also include information from anonymous officials who may testify publicly under whistleblower protections.
These officials have expressed concerns about potential retaliation, citing previous instances where individuals who came forward were bullied by leadership.
Green emphasized the need to ensure their protection, as some of these individuals have their retirements on the line.
The release of the report is expected to further intensify the ongoing debate over immigration policies and the performance of the Biden administration.
House Republicans hope that the findings will bolster their case against Mayorkas and potentially lead to further action, such as impeachment proceedings.
