Former Republican Texas representative Mayra Flores has announced her bid for a comeback in the House after losing to Democrat Representative Vincente Gonzalez in the previous election.
Flores, who is married to a border agent, made the announcement on Fox and Friends, where she criticized the work of Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, calling for his impeachment due to his handling of the border situation.
Flores specifically highlighted the issue of child trafficking and the Biden Administration's failure to account for 85,000 missing children, stating that this alone is a reason to impeach Mayorkas.
In addition to her criticism of Mayorkas, Flores declared her campaign for a seat in Texas, stating, "I am announcing for Congress. We are taking back our seat." She expressed determination to flip the district and regain what she believes is rightfully theirs in the upcoming 2024 election.
Flores previously won a special election in 2022, successfully flipping a Texas House seat that Biden had won by 13 points in 2020. At the time, the district had an 84 percent Hispanic population. However, due to redistricting, she lost to Democratic incumbent Gonzalez.
Flores outlined the key focuses of her campaign, which include empowering border patrol agents, protecting trafficked children, and addressing economic concerns. She referred to her campaign as "the People's campaign" and urged the Hispanic population to vote Republican, asserting that their values align with the Republican party. Flores emphasized her conservative upbringing, stating, "I am pro-God, pro-life, pro-family... We were raised with strong conservative values, to always put God and family first. We're all about hard work. That is who we are."
Flores also criticized the push for Hispanics to vote for the Democratic party, arguing that it is an attempt to use them as a voting block. She highlighted the differences in values between Hispanics and the Democratic party, stating that the party "stands against everything [Hispanics] stand for."
With her announcement, Mayra Flores has set the stage for a competitive race in Texas, as she seeks to regain the seat she previously held and champion conservative values that resonate with the Hispanic community.
