Justice Sotomayor Admits She Hopes The Court Takes Back Its 'Crazy' Rulings And One Trump Case Tops Her List

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is openly urging a future Supreme Court to overturn its landmark 2024 ruling that granted broad immunity to presidents for official acts taken while in office.

Speaking at George Washingtons Mount Vernon estate in Virginia during a public forum on civic education, she criticized several recent decisions and singled out the presidential immunity ruling as one she wants reversed, according to Just The News. From the stage, Sotomayor declared, I dissent a lot. Im hoping that the court will take back some of the crazy things that its done, before quickly adding that she was only joking maybe not.

She then dropped any pretense of humor, telling the audience, No, seriously. You know, Ive spoken openly about this, there are some opinions that I hope in my lifetime will get overturned. The immunity case is one of them," making clear that her objections to the ruling are both deep and enduring. She later reiterated that the immunity decision was among the opinions she hopes will be reversed while she is still on the bench or alive to see it.

The 2024 decision in Trump v. United States, a 6-3 ruling by the courts conservative majority, held that presidents enjoy absolute immunity for core constitutional powers and at least presumptive immunity for other official acts, while conduct unrelated to official duties remains unprotected. That framework, which shields President Donald Trump and future presidents from criminalization of legitimate executive action, has been fiercely opposed by the courts liberal wing, underscoring a broader ideological clash over whether unelected judges should narrow the constitutional scope of the presidency or defer to the voters and the separation of powers.
