Brooke Rollins Unveils A 'SNAP Fraudster' Halloween Costume And Warns Taxpayer Thieves 'The Tricks Are Over'

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins ignited a political firestorm over the weekend with a pointed Halloween-themed jab at welfare fraud that has Democrats accusing her of racism and conservatives praising her for defending taxpayers.

The controversy centers on a mock Spirit Halloween costume image Rollins shared online, labeled SNAP FRAUDSTER, featuring Atlanta rapper and social media figure Mercedes Reshard Newbetter known as Shawty Dredflipping his middle finger while clutching a burning dollar bill amid piles of cash and jewelry, according to Gateway Pundit. The parody costume lists its features as Flexes wealth and questionable fashion choices, Steals MILLIONS from American Taxpayers, and Goes to jail, with accessories including STACKS OF TAXPAYERS CASH, FAKE GRILLS, an EBT CARD, and HANDCUFFS.

Rollins, who has made rooting out abuse in federal benefit programs a hallmark of her tenure in President Trumps second administration, underscored the message with a blunt caption. Some costumes come with a price tag. This one comes with a prison sentence. To anyone stealing from American taxpayers: The tricks are over. The treats are running out. Happy Halloween! she wrote, making clear her target was fraud, not race.

The man depicted in the image is not a random meme subject but an accused criminal at the center of a sweeping federal case. A federal grand jury in the Northern District of Georgia indicted New on October 7 on 46 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count each of SNAP fraud and illegal transactions with access devices.

New was taken into custody in Las Vegas on October 13, far from the Atlanta area where prosecutors say his alleged scheme was centered. According to charging documents, between January 2020 and July 2026, New allegedly controlled more than 350 fraudulent SNAP accounts opened with stolen identities and had EBT cards mailed to multiple addresses around metro Atlanta.

Prosecutors say New even registered his company, Shawty Dred LLC, as an authorized SNAP retailer, turning a taxpayer-funded safety net into a personal cash machine. Over the life of the scheme, roughly $4.6 million in benefits was transferred into fraudulent accounts, with about $4 million siphoned out.

Investigators allege that New used a point-of-sale device tied to his business to steal more than $660,000 before the USDA revoked his authorization. Even after law enforcement seized some of the cards, he allegedly continued to obtain replacements, exploiting bureaucratic gaps to keep the money flowing.

Federal officials have folded the case into a broader Justice Department crackdown targeting nearly $42 million in SNAP and related fraud, a push conservatives argue is long overdue. For many on the right, Rollinss post simply highlighted a real indictment and underscored the need to protect welfare programs from criminal abuse that robs working Americans.

Democrats and left-wing commentators, however, immediately branded the graphic racist and despicable, focusing on the image rather than the alleged crimes. Rep. Shontel Brown of Ohio quote-posted Rollins and wrote, Despicable. Disgusting. Not even hiding it And I look forward to your answer to what motivated this graphic when you appear in front of the Agriculture Committee in January.

Virginia Democrat Rep. James Walkinshaw escalated the partisan theatrics by posting his own mock costume packaging of President Trump labeled a CONVICTED FRAUDSTER. Leftist outlets including Raw Story, Mediaite, and HuffPost rushed to frame Rollinss post as a racist dog whistle, reinforcing a familiar narrative that any tough stance on welfare abuse is inherently suspect.

Outside progressive circles, many observers noted that Rollins has consistently publicized individual SNAP fraud cases, including identity theft schemes involving deceased children, regardless of the suspects race. For those focused on accountability rather than identity politics, the real scandal is not a Halloween meme but the ease with which criminals allegedly looted millions from a program meant to help the truly needyand the determination of this administration to finally shut that pipeline down.
