The Department of Homeland Security has begun a sweeping national crackdown on illegal immigrants accused of looting taxpayer-funded food assistance, with federal agents already making multiple arrests tied to alleged Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) fraud.
According to Fox News, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that several illegal immigrants have been taken into custody on accusations they unlawfully obtained SNAP benefits, a program intended to help struggling American families put food on the table. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin underscored the administrations stance, declaring, "Illegal aliens who have no right to be here in the first place are the last people who should be using SNAP benefits and other forms of welfare."
"These programs are for Americans only," he continued. "Even non-violent illegal alien crime can still have devastating consequences when theyre defrauding the American taxpayer."
Mullin emphasized that those already apprehended and deported represent "just a drop in the bucket," stressing that the Trump administration will press forward with efforts to identify and remove individuals accused of defrauding federal benefit programs.
DHS officials have highlighted several cases involving Haitian nationals who were allegedly living in the United States illegally while drawing SNAP benefits. According to federal authorities, Rubstony Junior Theodore, a Haitian national residing unlawfully in the country, was arrested by ICE as part of the operation, with DHS noting his criminal history includes arrests for larceny, obstruction of officers and trespassing.
Three additional Haitian nationals Wilbert Jean Baptiste, Louis Jean and Jhensly Charles were also arrested while living illegally in the United States, according to DHS. Another suspect, Elizabeth Povea Rodriguez, a Cuban national in the country illegally, was taken into custody after previously being convicted of disorderly conduct and arrested on battery and domestic violence allegations, DHS said.
"These arrests mark the opening salvo in a sustained, large-scale ICE operation specifically targeting illegal aliens who have fraudulently accessed SNAP benefits that American taxpayers fund exclusively for U.S. citizens in need," DHS stated. "Every one of these individuals entered the country unlawfully, then proceeded to draw from a program designed to feed struggling American families, in some cases while carrying criminal records," the agency continued.
Federal law already prohibits most illegal immigrants from accessing SNAP, allowing only limited categories of lawfully present noncitizens to qualify, yet the latest arrests suggest systemic abuse that conservatives have long warned about. DHS said the Trump administration will continue to pursue alleged SNAP fraud as part of a broader effort to safeguard federal benefits, protect taxpayers, and prioritize American citizens over those who violated U.S. immigration laws.
