New York Citys self-described socialist mayor insists the city is on the right track even as a broad-daylight subway killing raises fresh doubts about public safety underground.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday refused to say whether he would increase the NYPD presence in the transit system after the midday murder of a security guard on a Midtown platform, as reported by The New York Post. Pressed on whether he would order a flood of cops underground to reassure riders after the brazen attack with the gunman still at large Mamdani instead delivered a meandering response that sidestepped any concrete commitment.
I have full confidence in our PD in their work to apprehend the suspect, and I am confident in the approach that they are taking at this time, the democratic socialist lawmaker told reporters at an unrelated press conference in The Bronx. The mayors remarks, heavy on rhetoric and light on specifics, underscored the progressive tendency to avoid robust policing even when violent crime shocks the public conscience.
Mamdani extended condolences to the family of 26-year-old Darrel Rodriguez, who was shot in the chest just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the 53rd Street/7th Avenue station by a masked assailant who has yet to be arrested. I am heartbroken and outraged by this shooting, Mamdani said again declining to answer a direct question about the citys concrete plan following the killing.
Every single New Yorker deserves to be safe on every single train, on every single subway platform, no matter where theyre going across our five boroughs, and we know that weve made strides in making our subway safer, and we also know that this shooting serves as an incredibly painful reminder of all that still has to be done to root out the scourge of gun violence from across our city, he said. And at this time, you know, my heart goes out to the family of the individual who was killed, to the loved ones of the individual who was killed.
