A routine immigration enforcement operation in the Bronx has ignited a fresh clash between federal authorities and New Yorks ascendant socialist left, with activists demanding the ouster of the citys police commissioner for the apparent offense of telling the public the suspects criminal history.
According to The Post Millennial, the incident unfolded Thursday night when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, operating in plainclothes, shot and wounded a man later identified as 28-year-old Oscar Belgal during an encounter in a residential neighborhood of the Bronx. The shooting immediately triggered protests, with left-wing activists and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) organizers denouncing police violence, calling for an end to federal immigration enforcement, and insisting that Belgal be released, despite the citys sanctuary policies that already bar the NYPD from cooperating with ICE in most circumstances.
The political firestorm intensified when NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch briefed the public and, in a move that enraged the DSA, disclosed Belgals criminal record. The individual who was shot has been identified as 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, Tisch said. He has two prior arrests in New York City. One for robbery in 2023, in which he pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny and received five years' probation, and one for criminal sale of a controlled substance in 2025, which is still pending. At this time, federal agents have exercised their authority to take over the investigation. She further noted that the ICE officers involved were in plainclothes, wearing construction vests and masks, a detail that later became a talking point for critics of the operation.
Within 20 minutes of the initial reports, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Belgal is an illegal alien from the Dominican Republic, a fact that undercuts the narrative that this was simply an innocent resident targeted without cause. Court documents and other reports list his name with varying spellingsBelgal, Bergal, and Bengalbut the record is consistent on one point: he has gang ties and a history of serious criminal conduct, including grand larceny, multiple assaults, drug possession, and weapons possession. DHS vowed to deport him, only to be blocked when a judge intervened, claiming that Bergal had filed a motion to remain in the United States, a familiar pattern in a system where activist judges often prioritize the claims of criminal aliens over public safety.
DHS did not mince words about the threat they say Belgal poses. He has associations to the Trinitarios gang, DHS said. The same gang who brutally killed an officer last year. This criminal illegal alien was arrested by the NYPD on December 7, 2023 but was released into the community a few days later. A judge had turned him loose despite his convictions and alleged crimes, a decision that left federal agents to track him down later under more dangerous conditions. When ICE officers finally caught up with him, authorities say he refused to comply with commands, leading to the shooting and placing his 5-year-old son, who was in the car at the time, directly in harms way.
Rather than focus on the failures that allowed a known gang-linked illegal immigrant with a violent record to remain on the streets, DSA-aligned officials quickly turned their ire on ICE and the NYPD. At a Thursday night press conference near the scene, State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani launched into a broadside against federal agents. There is no explanation for these tactics. There is no explanation for federal officers firing this many rounds into a car that has a five-year-old in the car, there is no explanation. We are standing here so close to the site of where this actually took place, and look at how many people live right here. This is a residential neighborhood. He continued, We are right here by a subway, and the pretext of ICE is, in their words, to keep this country safe. How is it keeping anyone safe to have, as you just heard from the police commissioner, individuals wearing construction vests in masks with long guns? Residents have no idea if these are law enforcement agents or if they are simply attacking someone on the street. And when it comes to ICE, it begs the question: What's the difference? There is no explanation for this.
From there, the DSAs national leadership escalated the rhetoric into a direct attack on Commissioner Tisch and, by extension, on any effort to enforce immigration law in New York City. The National Political Committee of the DSA, which counts among its members prominent figures such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Zohran Mamdani, Daraliza Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and Melat Kiros, issued a sweeping demand that the mayor remove the citys top cop. We demand that Mayor Zohran Mamdani fire NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and use every power available to him to drive ICE out of New York City. The statement, aside from its radical content, betrayed a basic misunderstanding of constitutional limits: local officials have no authority to drive ICE out of any jurisdiction, nor can they nullify federal law.
In reality, there are no such powers available to Mamdani or any other city official to obstruct federal immigration enforcement, which is firmly within Washingtons jurisdiction. Commissioner Tisch, for her part, has no authority to expel ICE from the city and, judging by her emphasis on crime reduction, little inclination to join the lefts crusade against federal agents. When pressed on how he would proceed against the commissioner, Mamdani offered only bureaucratic vagueness: In terms of what I will be doing with the police commissioner is a review of that entire 24-hour period.
The DSAs own messaging leaves little doubt that its objective is not reform but the dismantling of immigration enforcement altogether. Socialist elected officials must lead this fight, the group declared in its ICE out of NYC! memo, not capitulate or waver in the face of political pressure or sacrifice the immigrant community for the sake of other reforms. DSA elected must use their offices to confront institutions and use every lever under their control. The language is explicit: elected socialists are expected to use their offices not to uphold the law, but to wage institutional war against those tasked with enforcing it.
Daraliza Chevalier, a DSA-backed candidate running for Congress in New Yorks 13th District and widely expected to win, reinforced that message by promising to take her fight against immigration enforcement to the federal level. She claims that enforcement only brings more violence and terror into our communities to allow these systems to terrorize folks like this. In her telling, the problem is not a criminal alien with gang ties and a record of violence, but the systems that attempt to remove him from the country.
Chevalier also took direct aim at Commissioner Tisch for the simple act of informing the public about Belgals criminal past. The commissioner, she said, decided that it was appropriate to reference Oscar's past contact with the police as if there was anything that would ever justify having 7 rounds shot into a car with a child in it, to me, highlights the need to protect all folks in our community from this type of violence. That framing neatly sidesteps the central question: why was a known gang-associated illegal immigrant with prior convictions and pending charges free in the first place, and why is the political left more outraged by ICEs response than by the risks posed to law-abiding residents?
At its core, the DSAs position is stark and unapologetic: criminal aliens should remain at large, and immigration enforcement should effectively cease. The organization states of its elected officials, They should not stand in opposition to those protesting to abolish ice but join their ranks as a leader figure, serving to mobilize working class people rather than retreat into political expediency while immigrant communities suffer the most. That vision leaves little room for the rule of law, for the safety of citizens and legal residents, or for the basic expectation that violent offendersespecially those in the country illegallywill be removed rather than shielded.
