New York Democratic Gov.
Kathy Hochul has agreed to enroll her state in President Donald Trumps federal school choice initiative, a move that puts her at odds with powerful teachers unions that dominate the Democratic Partys education agenda.
The program, called the Education Freedom Tax Credit, permits individual taxpayers to claim up to a $1,700 dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit for contributions to private and non-profit scholarship-granting organizations, according to Just The News. Conservatives have long argued that such policies empower parents, foster competition, and weaken the monopoly of union-controlled public school systems that have too often failed students despite record spending.
Every parent wants their child to have a great education and the best possible chance to succeed. Thats what guides my decisions as governor, Hochul said, while insisting that New Yorks public schools are the backbone of communities across this state. Thats why Ive made historic investments in public education, increasing school funding by more than $10 billion. Her decision follows an aggressive campaign by teachers unions and public school advocates, who circulated a petition demanding she reject the program on the grounds that it would steer benefits toward private school families instead of students in government-run schools, as reported by Fox News.
The governor, however, maintained she could not leave money on the table when it could help our kids, signaling a rare break from union orthodoxy in favor of leveraging a Trump-era policy to expand educational opportunity. She said she has been working with education leaders who have pledged to use the program to support public school students, adding, I look forward to working with education leaders across the state to make sure these resources reach students in every community. My commitment to public education has not changed, and it never will.
Set to launch on January 1, 2027, the initiative positions New York to tap federal incentives that many blue states have shunned for ideological reasons, even as parents demand more choice and accountability. Whether Hochuls move signals a broader shift within her party or remains an isolated concession to political and fiscal reality, it underscores that school choiceonce dismissed by the left as a fringe conservative causeis increasingly difficult for Democrats to ignore.
