A federal immigration enforcement operation in New York City erupted into gunfire, leaving a Dominican national wounded and reigniting a fierce political clash over the citys sanctuary policies and the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on local streets.
According to The Post Millennial, the New York City Police Department announced Thursday evening that a man had been shot by ICE agents in the Marble Hill section near the Bronx, stressing that city officers were not part of the operation. The NYPD said the individual was injured, conscious, and was receiving medical attention, and emphasized that local police were not involved in the incident.
In a formal statement, the department explained the sequence of events and its absence from the scene. At around 4pm today, there was a shooting involving federal law enforcement agents in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx. The NYPD was not involved in the incident and was not on scene at the time of the shooting. The individual who was shot is at a nearby hospital and is currently conscious and receiving medical attention.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, later detailed the operation that led to the shooting, underscoring that the target was not a random bystander but a repeat offender shielded by New Yorks progressive sanctuary framework. On October 8, at approximately 4:00 PM ET, ICE officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx, New York, to arrest a criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny, and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession.
Federal officials further linked the suspect to a violent street gang with a deadly record against law enforcement. He has associations to the Trinitarios gang. The same gang who brutally killed a CBP officer last year. This criminal illegal alien was arrested by the NYPD on December 7, 2023, but was released into the community a few days later by reckless Democrat sanctuary policies that put American lives at risk. During the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the criminal illegal alien was injured. ICE officers immediately rendered aid.
DHS confirmed that the man survived and that multiple federal agencies were now involved in reviewing the use of force. The individual is alive and at a local hospital. The FBI and HSI are on the scene. The incident remains under investigation. More information will be shared as it becomes available. When dangerous illegal aliens are released back onto the streets by radical sanctuary politicians, our officers are forced to make arrests at large in the community in unpredictable and dangerous environments. Our officers should not have to risk their lives, and innocent Americans should not have to face unnecessary danger, because sanctuary politicians refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement.
In a follow-up post, DHS reiterated the same account of the operation and again highlighted the suspects criminal history and gang ties, underscoring the public-safety rationale for the arrest. The department repeated its sharp criticism of New Yorks sanctuary policies, arguing that local refusal to cooperate with federal immigration authorities directly contributed to the dangerous confrontation. DHS again warned that political decisions by left-wing officials were forcing federal agents into volatile street encounters that endanger both officers and bystanders. Our officers should not have to risk their lives, and innocent Americans should not have to face unnecessary danger, because sanctuary politicians refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement.
Even before the facts of the shooting were fully established, New York Citys progressive leadership moved quickly to condemn ICE and to portray the incident as an attack on a local resident rather than the culmination of a federal manhunt for a repeat offender. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani weighed in, saying This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed, he said.
Mamdani escalated his rhetoric, using the incident to demand a total halt to immigration enforcement in the nations largest city. This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.
The mayor then turned the shooting into a broader political rallying cry against federal immigration enforcement, echoing long-standing activist calls to dismantle ICE altogether. Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery. Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children. Abolish ICE, he concluded.
On the ground, left-wing activists responded by attempting to obstruct federal authorities in the immediate aftermath of the confrontation. Protesters blocked federal vehicles following reports of the shooting.
Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat who has consistently aligned with New Yorks sanctuary posture, also seized on the incident to criticize federal agents and demand an extensive accounting. Governor Kathy Hochul said Ive been briefed on this afternoons shooting involving federal law enforcement agents in the Bronx. We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident. New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.
In a subsequent statement, Hochul framed the episode as a source of fear for immigrant communities, while again focusing blame on ICE rather than on the suspects alleged criminal record and gang connections. She said in a later post New Yorkers are outraged tonight. Immigrant communities are terrified. And we are demanding answers.
Hochul cited early reports about the presence of a child in the vehicle, using that detail to question the judgment of federal officers operating in a city whose own policies had previously released the suspect back into the community. There is still much we dont know about what happened in Marble Hill. But initial reports indicate ICE agents fired into a vehicle with a five-year-old child inside. Any trained law enforcement officer knows how easily that could have ended in tragedy. By the grace of God, that child appears to have escaped without physical injury.
The governor then broadened her criticism into a sweeping indictment of ICE as a rogue agency, despite the suspects alleged history of serious crime and gang affiliation. No child should ever have to experience the terror of gunfire, let alone wonder if theyll make it home alive. As a mother and grandmother, I cannot imagine how frightening those moments must have been. New Yorkers have witnessed far too many acts of violence by a rogue federal agency and untrained agents that operate with impunity. Federal authorities need to provide answers, and they must do so immediately.
As federal investigators from the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations review the shooting, the clash in Marble Hill has laid bare a stark divide: on one side, federal officers tasked with removing a criminal illegal alien tied to a violent gang and repeatedly cycled through the justice system; on the other, Democrat officials and activists who would rather Abolish ICE than cooperate with federal law enforcement. With sanctuary policies already under fire for releasing dangerous offenders back onto city streets, the unanswered questions now extend beyond the specifics of the shooting to whether New Yorks political leadership will ever acknowledge the public-safety costs of shielding criminal illegal aliens from deportation.
