Florida Democratic Politician Re-Arrested After DNA Links Him To Missing 15-Year-Old Girl

A Florida Democratic politician and former college professor is facing a growing list of serious charges after authorities say he was discovered in a hotel room with a missing 15-year-old girl and later linked to her through forensic evidence.

According to Western Journal, 46-year-old Richard Tapia of Palm Coast was first arrested in July after deputies with the Flagler County Sheriffs Office located him at a Palm Coast hotel with a 15-year-old who had been reported missing. Tapia was initially charged with interference with child custody, but the case quickly escalated as investigators dug deeper into the circumstances surrounding the encounter.

As September drew to a close, the sheriffs office announced that Tapia had been re-arrested on additional charges of lewd or lascivious battery on a minor after forensic testing confirmed his DNA was present in a sexual assault kit involving a missing 15-year-old child. The July incident began to unravel when the girls mother discovered where her daughter was and alerted law enforcement, who then responded to the hotel where the teen was found with an adult male.

When deputies arrived, the girl attempted to flee down a back stairwell while Tapia exited through the lobby, behavior that immediately raised further suspicions for investigators. At that time, the girl told authorities that Tapia had raped her multiple times, allegations that later prompted the forensic testing cited by the sheriffs office.

This mothers determination helped us find her daughter which started the investigation on this pervert, Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said, underscoring the crucial role of parental vigilance in protecting children. Our detectives followed the evidence and built a strong case against this predator who took advantage of a vulnerable child.

The sheriffs office has publicly stated that it is working to determine whether additional victims may be connected to Tapia, a concern that often arises in cases involving alleged sexual exploitation of minors. Tapia was booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where he is being held on a $350,000 bond as the investigation continues.

The fallout has extended beyond the criminal case and into Tapias academic career at Miami Dade College, where he had taught for years. An August report from The Reporter, the colleges student newspaper, noted that the institution terminated Tapias employment following the initial incident.

The allegations are deeply disturbing and wholly inconsistent with the values and standards of our institution, the college said in a statement, distancing itself from the disgraced educator. Tapia, who ran as a Democrat for a Florida House seat in 2018, now joins a troubling roster of Democratic figures, including former Rep. Eric Swalwell of California, who have faced accusations of sexual misconduct while their party continues to posture as the guardian of moral and social justice.

Tapia had served three years as an adjunct before being elevated in 2013 to professor of political science and international relations, a role that placed him in direct contact with young adults and lent him the authority of an academic mentor. The additional allegations are deeply troubling, and the conduct described is reprehensible, the college said in a September statement after the new charges were filed, according to The Reporter.

This marks the third arrest of a Miami Dade College employee in as many months for alleged sexual crimes involving minors, raising serious questions about institutional oversight and the broader cultural rot that President Trumps supporters have long warned is festering in left-leaning academic and political circles. As prosecutors move forward, conservatives will be watching closely to see whether the justice system treats this Democratic politician and professor with the same rigor it applies to ordinary citizens, and whether any further victims step forward to expose the full scope of the alleged abuse.
