New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is now championing a plan to hand out tens of thousands of free opera tickets, even as the city grapples with crime, illegal immigration, and a soaring cost of living.
According to the Gateway Pundit, Mamdani has rolled out Opera for All, a partnership between the city and the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center that will distribute 70,000 free tickets through a monthly lottery to New Yorkers who have never attended a performance, with offerings ranging from *Macbeth* to *La Bohme*, according to a press release from the mayors office. FOX News reports that critics on social media immediately questioned the priorities of a mayor who appears more focused on cultural giveaways than on addressing the daily concerns of working- and middle-class residents.
A spokesperson for Mamdanis office told Fox News Digital the city is not directly funding the program, insisting that the Metropolitan Opera is donating tickets from its pool of unsold seats, representing about 10% of its seasonal capacity, while the city will simply promote and distribute them. Even so, taxpayers are left to wonder how much bureaucratic time, administrative cost, and political capital are being poured into a project that primarily benefits a prestigious institution long associated with elite tastes.
In a promotional video, Mamdani appeared alongside the cast of *La Bohme*, declaring that every New Yorker should have the opportunity to see this no matter how much money is in their pocket. He also invoked former New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardias Peoples Opera, founded in 1943 to offer affordable tickets before filing for bankruptcy in 2013 and relaunching in 2016, a reminder that such ventures often collapse when confronted with economic reality.
As the city urges participants to be sure to bring your valid ID! to claim their seats, one basic question remains unanswered: Someone should probably ask the mayor who is paying for all of those opera tickets.
