Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has once again rattled his own party, this time with a revealing onstage slip that underscored just how uneasy many Democrats have become about where he truly stands.
During an appearance at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Saturday, an audience member posed a straightforward question to the Pennsylvania senator: why not simply declare himself an Independent. According to Gateway Pundit, Fetterman responded without hesitation, Because Im a lifelong Republican.
CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett, seated beside him, instantly interjected with a corrective Democrat. The crowd erupted in laughter as Fetterman put his hand to his head, chuckled, and acknowledged the political fallout that was sure to follow, remarking, Thats gonna break through, and, Thatll get clipped.
Attempting to contain the damage, Fetterman quickly reversed himself and offered the official line: Im a lifelong Democrat. Yet the moment only added fuel to growing speculation on the left that the senators loyalties are drifting away from an increasingly radical Democratic Party and toward a more centristor even conservativealignment.
Earlier this month, Fetterman had already alarmed progressives by appearing in a pre-recorded video at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, introducing his great friend, Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA). In that message, he described himself as a common-sense Democrat, pledged he would always stand with America, and vowed to reject the extremes and Socialism and that anti-American way of life.
The reaction from the left was swift and hysterical. Days later, Gateway Pundit reported that Democrats were openly fretting on television about a potential party switch, with Jen Psaki warning that Democrats needed to be clear eyed that he might flip parties, and Mitch Landrieu insisting that even a second grader in politics could see that a sitting Democrat addressing a Republican convention looks like a man auditioning for a new team.
Anonymous former staffers responded by launching an X account threatening to unload damaging information on Fetterman, while far-left activists began floating primary challenges. The same progressive operatives who once marketed him as a blue-collar folk hero now denounce his support for Israel, his votes with Republicans on Iran, and his blunt characterization of the DSA as deeply anti-American as ideological heresy.
Back in June, Gateway Pundit noted Fettermans own stark assessment of the party he still nominally serves: the Democratic Party is becoming an orgy of socialism. He added that the New York primaries vindicate my description, a judgment that, combined with his recent remarks and Republican outreach, leaves Democrats increasingly nervous that their populist icon may be edging toward the exits.
