California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has signed ten new gun control measures into law, including a first-of-its-kind statute aimed at preventing 3D printers from producing firearms.
According to Breitbart, the centerpiece of the new package is The Firearm Printing Prevention Act (AB 2047), which was immediately celebrated by Mike Bloomberg-affiliated Everytown for Gun Safety as groundbreaking legislation. The law is crafted to stop the next generation of ghost guns before they are made by requiring consumer 3D printers sold in California to incorporate technology that identifies and blocks attempts to print firearms and illegal firearm parts, effectively conscripting private technology into the states gun-control regime.
Another measure, Senate Bill 948, dramatically expands Californias Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) requirements by mandating a minimum four-hour training course beginning in 2029, including live-fire exercises and state-prescribed classroom instruction, according to the NRA-ILA. Critics warn that such mandates will fall hardest on law-abiding citizens, adding cost, time, and bureaucracy to the exercise of a constitutional right while doing little to deter criminals who already ignore existing laws.
Data collection and surveillance of lawful gun owners are also broadened under AB 1743, which expands the states firearm owners data-sharing framework by increasing access to information maintained in Californias Automated Firearms System and related databases. Senate Bill 1220 further tightens the screws by [adding] a new firearm-prohibiting misdemeanor to Californias list of offenses that trigger a 10-year firearm prohibition, raising concerns that relatively minor infractions could now strip citizens of their Second Amendment rights for a decade.
Gov. Newsoms office issued a press release hailing California as the [No. 1] state in the nation for gun law strength and effectiveness, touting the new laws as a model for the rest of the country. Notably absent from that statement were FBI statistics highlighted by Breitbart News showing that while California leads the nation in gun control, it was also No. 1 in active shooter instances in both 2021 and 2023, a sobering reminder that aggressive regulation does not necessarily translate into greater safety.
As Democrats in Sacramento continue to tighten restrictions, conservatives argue that these measures punish responsible gun owners while failing to address the root causes of violent crime. With California already serving as the progressive laboratory for sweeping gun regulations, the clash between expansive state control and the individual liberties protected by the Second Amendmentdefended by voices such as Breitbarts AWR Hawkinswill only intensify in the years ahead.
