A Republican senator is urging a formal Senate investigation into both Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, demanding that each testify under oath about their business dealings and any benefits derived from their presidential family ties.
According to Mediaite, Sen. John Curtis (R-UT) framed his call for a probe as a response to collapsing public confidence in federal institutions and to mounting reports about foreign interests cultivating access through presidential relatives. He pointed specifically to recent claims that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev financed an extravagant afterparty for Donald Trump Jr.s wedding, and to long-scrutinized accounts of Hunter Bidens lucrative ventures in Ukraine while his father, former President Joe Biden, held national office.
Curtis argued that these matters go beyond partisan score-settling and strike at the heart of national security and public trust. These reports raise legitimate questions about foreign access to members of a sitting presidents family and whether such relationships can create actual or perceived expectations of favorable treatment, he wrote, warning that such arrangements could even create national security vulnerabilities.
The Utah Republican stressed that the American people deserve a single, consistent standard of ethics regardless of which party controls the White House. The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president, Curtis declared, adding, Nor should congressional oversight begin and end when control of the White House changes hands.
In his letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and ranking member Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Curtis formally requested a broad inquiry into the use of presidential family relationships for private financial benefit, preferential treatment, or access by domestic and foreign interests. He continued, As part of that investigation, I urge the Committee to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden to testify regarding their past business dealings, relationships with foreign individuals and entities, gifts, or other benefits they have received, and any instances in which their relationship to the President was invoked or understood to provide value.
Curtis maintained that the objective is not political theater but a clear accounting of the facts and a tightening of ethics safeguards. The purpose of such an inquiry should be straightforward: establish the facts, determine whether existing ethics, disclosure, or anti-corruption laws apply, and identify reforms necessary to prevent the presidency from becoming a vehicle for private enrichment by those closest to it.
For their part, Donald Trump Jr. and his new wife, Bettina Andersen, have rejected any suggestion of impropriety surrounding Kremlevs role in their celebration. They described the event as an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful, underscoring that, despite the political furor, no evidence has yet shown that President Trumps family used public power for private gain.
