Their joint event, set for Detroit, underscores how aggressively Democrats are leaning on identity politics and progressive symbolism in a state that has increasingly trended away from their agenda in recent election cycles.
Politico reported comments by El-Sayed indicating his optimism about Harris presence, signaling that he views her as an asset rather than a liability. Im just really looking forward to having her here, and she is somebody who so many folks in communities like Detroit look up to as an inspirational leader, he said.
El-Sayed further emphasized his enthusiasm for Harris involvement in mobilizing voters, particularly in urban and minority communities that Democrats routinely rely on but often take for granted. Im grateful that shes coming in and having conversations about what it takes to get the turnout up, so that we can get on to working on some of these issues in the U.S. Senate.
What potential lawmaker El-Sayed sees in Harris remains in question, given her record in office and her failure to connect with voters during her own presidential bid. While Democrats may view her as a symbolic figure, conservatives see a politician whose tenure has been marked more by word salads and photo-ops than by substantive accomplishments.
Politico noted that the duo is planning a roundtable on infant and maternal mortality rates among black Americans, an issue Democrats frequently highlight but rarely address with effective policy. But the question remains for the El-Sayed camp what does this do for him?
Harris has precisely zero achievements to stand on from her time as vice president, a reality that even some on the left quietly acknowledge. She was handed major responsibilities and high-profile portfolios, and each became a case study in mismanagement and missed opportunity.
She failed at the border. She failed in Afghanistan.
Listening to her speak, she failed in her high school English class. The Harris brand is an incoherent, unremarkable mess.
Republicans may come to see this as a positive development for Mike Rogers, their candidate in Michigan, who can contrast his own record and message with a Democratic ticket increasingly defined by ideological extremism and executive incompetence. Harris presence could energize the GOP base and push swing voters further away from a Democratic Party that appears more interested in symbolism than solutions.
For Harris herself, bolstering her public profile again could mean she is planning a presidential run in 2028, using appearances like this to rebuild relevance after a lackluster vice presidency and a disastrous 2024 performance. From her side, this could prove harmful in associating with El-Sayed and could isolate more moderate voters.
But it would help her with the far left, where activists and progressive operatives still prize identity and rhetoric over results and real-world outcomes. Aligning with El-Sayed and similar figures may cement her standing with the partys activist base even as it alienates centrists and independents.
Harris 2024 donors may not be lining up like they used to, a sign that even Democratic megadonors are wary of backing another weak standard-bearer. LinkedIn co-founder and billionaire Reid Hoffman, known for being a Democrat megadonor, said another Harris run would present a very challenging path, per Fox News.
Before anyone starts thinking Hoffman miraculously woke up to the dumpster fire that is the Democrats brand, in a completely ridiculous and almost laughable follow-up, he called New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pragmatic, saying, I think shes much more pragmatic than people give her credit for. That kind of comment reveals just how detached major Democratic funders have become from the concerns of ordinary Americans, who see AOCs agenda as radical, costly and fundamentally unserious.
Whether it be Harris or AOC, the Democrats still do not have a viable alternative for Vice President J.D. Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both of whom represent a more disciplined, policy-focused and traditionally grounded vision for the country. The contrast between Republican leadership and Democratic celebrity-politics grows sharper with each election cycle.
Of course, that doesnt rule out victory. It just means it would bring someone without a shred of competency to the White House without a clear vision for the country beyond President Donald Trump is bad.
