The 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks turned New York City into a place of solemn remembrance, reflection, and, at Yankee Stadium, a powerful display of unity that was briefly marred by a disgraceful act of political provocation.
At Ground Zero, the official commemoration honored the nearly 3,000 lives lost, while other memorials unfolded across the city, including a poignant ceremony before the Yankees-Mets game in the Bronx. According to RedState, the pregame observance at Yankee Stadium underscored how deeply 9/11 remains etched into the citys conscience and how sports can still serve as a unifying force in a divided nation.
Before the first pitch, the Yankees played a seven-minute video on the outfield scoreboard featuring members of the 2001 team reflecting on the aftermath of the attacks. Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Paul ONeill, Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada were among the former Yankees featured in the tribute.
Two people who lost their fathers in the attacks Brielle Saracini and her husband, Sean McGuire threw out the ceremonial first pitches. Both were 10 years old when their fathers were killed on Sept. 11, 2001.
Some of the 2001 Yankees were in attendance at the game, underscoring the continuity between that painful chapter in American history and the present day. Singer Lee Greenwood performed God Bless the USA, to rousing applause, followed by chants of USA."
The patriotic atmosphere, steeped in remembrance and national pride, was exactly what many Americans believe has been missing from public life in an era of politicized grievance. Yet into that remembrance ran a horrible man waving a Palestinian flag, who sprinted onto the field at 9:11 PM during the seventh inning.
Well this is something. A fan has run onto the field at Yankee Stadium. All amidst a 3-2, 2 outs, bases loaded count, might I add, one social media post noted, capturing the shock of the moment. Another account reported, ??NEW: On the anniversary of 9/11 at the @Yankees/@Mets game, a man wearing a Palestinian flag ran out onto the field and was immediately tackled by NYPD officers and dragged off. Fans could be seen throwing drinks and food at the man as he exited. Unreal.
That did not go over well, and many saw it as a slap in the face on this day of all days, at that time. He was ultimately tackled, and the crowd was not happy with this disgusting human being, as Yankees and Mets fans came together to respond by chanting "USA! USA!" while tossing drinks at the man, who was kicking at the security and police as he was removed from the field.
