Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is now openly invoking God to justify her progressive agenda, casting her political organizing as a kind of divine mission.
According to Gateway Pundit, the congresswoman addressed the National Baptist Convention in Orlando, Florida, and portrayed recent left-wing gains as evidence of Gods hand in politics. Breitbart News reports that she told attendees she is amazed watching how God works in pushing progressive causes, particularly through organizing in deep-red states.
Speaking of her 2024 rally tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Ocasio-Cortez described visits to conservative strongholds as acts of faith rather than political calculation. Why would you go to Idaho? Why would you go to Montana? Why would you go to Utah? Ocasio-Cortez said. I felt very called.
She went on to claim that a miracle followed their efforts in Utah, where she linked left-wing organizing to a subsequent court decision on redistricting. We said we must have the faith of a mustard seed. We must organize anyway, she said. One year later, out of nowhere, a judge strikes down Utahs map and they are ordered to redraw. And it is only because of the organizing that we did in faith when there was no evidence.
For many people of faith, this sudden theological framing from a staunchly progressive lawmaker will raise more questions than it answers. When religious language is deployed only to sanctify leftist policy victories, it risks looking less like sincere belief and more like a calculated attempt to co-opt the church for partisan ends.
The congresswomans remarks highlight a broader trend on the left: if faith cannot be erased from public life, it will be repurposed to bless progressive priorities. Now that she is publicly speaking of God and miracles, critics will reasonably ask whether this professed faith extends to defending the unbornor whether her support for abortion on demand remains untouched by the religious convictions she now claims to embrace.
