Andrew Garfield is once again pressing Hollywood to consider a gay iteration of Spider-Man, insisting the iconic superheros mask should be open to all identities.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Garfield revisited comments he first made in 2013, when he argued, Anyone can be in that suit, according to the Daily Caller. The British actor, who previously portrayed Peter Parker, is using his media tour for the new historical drama The Uprising to revive the debate over the characters sexuality.
Why cant he be gay? Why cant he be into boys? Garfield asked, repeating the same challenge to long-standing franchise norms that he raised more than a decade ago. He described his earlier remarks as an exercise in rebellion that I felt passionate about, and made clear that his position has not shifted.
I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit, Garfield said, framing Spider-Man as a blank canvas for identity politics rather than a fixed cultural archetype. He went on to argue that the heros popularity stems from erasing distinctions that many fans, particularly traditional audiences, still see as central to storytelling.
Thats the point of why its such a kind of universally beloved character, one of the greatly beloved characters in the history of fiction - is because you dont see skin color, you dont see gender, you dont see sexuality, Garfield continued. Anyone can project themselves into that suit, he told Entertainment Weekly, suggesting the franchise should lean further into progressive representation.
Garfield added that he likes the idea of a place where everyone is being honored, and everyone is being included, a vision that aligns with Hollywoods ongoing push for identity-based casting. While animated and multiverse versions have diversified Spider-Mans background, the live-action films have yet to feature a gay Spider-Man, leaving the characters traditional portrayal intact for now.
