According to Mediaite, Maher opened by lampooning the presidents decision to rechristen Lake Ontario as Lake America in the middle of an escalating trade clash with Canada. Trump is so mad at Canada he renamed Lake Ontario Lake America, Maher said. Now I gotta buy a new globe again.
Maher reminded viewers this was hardly the first geographic rebrand under Trump, joking, Its like the fifth time its happened, a clear nod to the January 2025 move to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. The audience roared as Maher pivoted from mocking the presidents bravado to skewering the lefts predictable fury.
The liberals are very pissed at this, Maher said, highlighting how progressives react with outrage to virtually every symbolic gesture from Trump. They say you cant just go around changing things to fit your political agenda, he added, before twisting the knife with, Just ask any Latinx birthing person.
That line underscored Mahers broader point: the same activists who invent ever-more-ideological language for gender and identity now feign shock when a conservative leader asserts his own political framing. While the left rails against Lake America, Trump is unapologetically using executive authority to advance a patriotic, nationalist message that resonates with many voters.
Trump signed the order renaming Lake Ontario on Thursday, telling reporters he had been considering the change for a long time. This is official, effective immediately, he declared in the Oval Office, underscoring his willingness to act decisively despite Canadian objections and media scorn.
The move comes as Washington and Ottawa are locked in a bitter economic confrontation, with the United States imposing 50% tariffs on Canadian goods and Prime Minister Mark Carney vowing to match them dollar-for-dollar. Far from backing down, Trump hinted that Lake America may only be the beginning of a broader reassertion of American identity on the map itself.
As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico we changed it. And now its very routinely the Gulf of America, he said. So if you think about it, we have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean. So maybe well have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific or maybe we will change them both.
