The Washington Post has been ordered by a private arbitrator to reinstate opinion columnist Karen Attiah and provide her with full back pay, despite her history of inflammatory and factually dubious commentary targeting conservatives and Israel.
According to The Daily Wire, Attiah was dismissed last September after a series of social media posts that many readers and colleagues viewed as openly contemptuous of public grief over the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. She took to the left-leaning platform Bluesky to deride the mourning for Kirk, writing, Refusing to tear my clothes and smear ashes on my face in performative mourning for a white man that espoused violence is not the same as violence.
Attiah went further, attributing to Kirk the statement, Black women do not have the brain-processing power to be taken seriously. You have to go steal a white persons slot. Journalist Jerry Dunleavy later pointed out that her characterization was misleading, noting that Kirks comments were directed at specific public figures former first lady Michelle Obama, the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), former MSNBC host Joy Reid, and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson rather than all black women.
Despite internal leadership at the Post reportedly labeling her conduct beyond the pale, gross misconduct, and a violation of company standards, arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa concluded the paper lacked good and sufficient cause to terminate her. Espinosa ruled that the outlet had breached its labor agreement, a decision that underscores how union and arbitration structures can shield even the most radical voices in legacy media from accountability.
Attiahs controversial record did not begin with her attacks on Kirk, but stretches back to her commentary on the Middle East and Israel. On the very day Hamas terrorists massacred 1,200 innocent civilians in Israel in October 2023, she amplified rhetoric that appeared to rationalize such brutality, reposting the line, what did yall think decolonization meant? vibes? papers? essays? Losers.
She also boosted a post sneering at traditional civil-rights narratives, sharing, All my American education taught was that all we have to do to fight brutal, racist oppression is schedule a single die-in or refuse to give up a single seat on a bus and justice automatically prevails through non-violence. At the same time, she touted her ideological pedigree, boasting, I studied race construction, human rights and global anti-colonial resistance in college and grad school. Honey, we did the scholarship way before it was cool.'
Her feed further suggested sympathy for violent resistance by non-state actors, as she echoed posts accusing supporters of Israel of aligning with oppressors, murderers, thieves and political manipulators. Such rhetoric, increasingly common in elite media and academia, reflects a broader progressive drift that excuses or reframes terrorism under the banner of decolonization, even as President Trumps second administration has emphasized law, order, and unequivocal support for Israels right to defend itself.
Attiah has greeted the arbitrators ruling as vindication, praising the Washington Post as one of the worlds most storied newspapers and saying she was relieved to finally have that record set straight. For many conservatives, however, the episode illustrates how powerful institutions bend over backward to protect left-wing ideologues, even when their words demean the dead, distort the truth, and normalize extremism a stark reminder of why trust in corporate media continues to erode.
