A woman at the center of a House Ethics Committee probe into California Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez is directly challenging his claim that their affair was consensual.
According to Just The News, the woman, through her attorneys, is pushing back on Gomezs public narrative as the ethics investigation intensifies. Her lawyers said in a statement, according to Fox News, that Gomezs assertion that the affair was consensual in natural, was untrue.
We fully expect that the House Committee on Ethics will come to the same conclusion in its investigation, the lawyers said. Their remarks underscore growing concerns about potential abuse of power when elected officials engage in intimate relationships with individuals who may be in vulnerable positions.
Gomez, a prominent California Democrat, has already admitted to personal misconduct while in office. Gomez admitted in a statement to Fox earlier this week that he made mistakes outside [his] marriage, following an announcement from the committee that it was launching an investigation into him for misconduct.
On Monday, Gomez said, Although my actions were consensual in nature and havent violated the law or House Ethics rules, that doesnt diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most. His insistence that his conduct was within legal and ethical bounds stands in sharp contrast to the womans account, raising serious questions about accountability and standards of behavior for members of Congress who routinely lecture the public on morality and consent.
