Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, is attacking one of Americas most beloved pastimes by claiming that toxic masculinity lies at the core of football culture.
According to the Daily Caller, El-Sayed argued that racism, homophobia and misogyny are embedded in the sport, despite the fact that he himself once played high school football. His remarks resurfaced from a 2021 Substack post in which the left-wing candidate weighed in on then-Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Grudens resignation after old emails containing language deemed racist, homophobic and misogynistic became public.
The toxic masculinity at the heart of Americas most popular sport and mens sports culture more generally is way deeper than a few emails or a Jay-Z turnaround, wrote El-Sayed, per The Midwesterner. For many voters, that kind of sweeping indictment sounds less like thoughtful criticism and more like the standard progressive impulse to pathologize anything traditionally masculine or broadly popular with middle America.
This is the classic progressive playbook: take a unifying national pastime, run it through an academic grievance filter, and declare it morally suspect and structurally broken. With El-Sayeds framing, the millions of Americans who pack stadiums and living rooms every Friday, Saturday and Sunday are not celebrating competition, teamwork and discipline, but supposedly actively participating in a system failure based on toxic masculinity.
What are we even talking about when a game that has long brought together people of every race, class and political stripe is smeared as a cultural sickness? Football has arguably done more to bridge racial, socio-economic and political divides than most of the pundits and activists now lecturing fans from the sidelines.
Michigan voters now face a clear choice between a candidate who disparages a sport that reflects their values of hard work, merit and camaraderie, and a different path that respects their traditions and freedoms. Michigan, yall know what to do: get out and vote, and ensure this kind of contempt for everyday Americans is kept far from the U.S. Senate.
