Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has unexpectedly drawn praise from conservative commentator Katie Miller after revealing she has begun the process of freezing her eggs, highlighting a rare moment of agreement across the political aisle on the importance of motherhood and family.
According to Mediaite, Ocasio-Cortez disclosed the decision during a weekend social media livestream, telling followers, Usually I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs. The announcement quickly drew a response from Miller, the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Stephen Miller, who wrote on X that We should celebrate.
Miller framed the congresswomans choice as a welcome counter to declining birth rates and a culture that often sidelines family formation. We have historically low birth rates worldwide. If one woman wants to preserve her right to have children, which means more than having nonewe should celebrate that, she wrote, underscoring a concern long voiced by social conservatives about demographic decline.
She went further, arguing that Ocasio-Cortezs example could encourage other women to embrace motherhood rather than delay it indefinitely in pursuit of career advancement. If she inspires other women to have babies, we should celebrate that. More women should get married and have babies younger, but too many women buy into the feminist lie and spend their childbearing years climbing the career ladder, Miller continued, directly challenging progressive feminist orthodoxy that often treats marriage and children as secondary or even burdensome.
Miller also tied the issue to broader cultural health, suggesting that a society more oriented toward children naturally becomes more open to life. When society has more babies and more young women and men are exposed to more babies, there will be more babies. Everyones journey to motherhood is different, just as each of us mothers differently. I cant wait to see how motherhood changes AOC, she added, signaling a belief that family life can reshape even the most staunchly progressive politicians.
Ocasio-Cortezs personal revelation quickly intersected with speculation about her political future during an interview with ABCs Jonathan Karl. Karl noted polling that placed her as a leading choice among Democrats in New Hampshire and asked, First of all, are you going to run for president?
The congresswoman initially deflected, insisting that her focus remains on her current race. I mean, Im focused on winning the midterms. Im running for Congress right now, she replied, before later acknowledging, Well I havent ruled out the possibility. And Im very humbled to the tremendous amount of support out there. I think that we have a responsibility to remain focused on the midterms and not on our individual aspirations or plans.
Karl then circled back to her personal news, saying, And then, before you go, you did have a personal announcement that you made it was interesting to see you kind of open up on an Instagram live, I believe it was. Ocasio-Cortez reiterated, So I have decided to start the process of freezing my eggs, and immediately sought to frame the decision in terms of reproductive politics, claiming, And in this political environment where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy.
She added that she believes public figures should speak openly about such choices, particularly for working women.
