Former Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin is warning that the Democratic Party has moved so far left that, in his words, there is no such thing as a moderate Democrat anymore.
His comments followed a fresh round of August 4 primary contests in which progressive and openly socialist candidates scored significant victories, most prominently Abdul El-Sayed in Michigans Democratic U.S. Senate primary, a Muslim contender backed by leading figures on the partys far-left flank, according to Western Journal. Speaking on Fox Business, Youngkin argued that these results reveal a deeper ideological struggle within the Democratic Party, one he believes the radicals are winning.
The Democrat Party is in a battle for its very soul, and what were seeing is the socialists are winning it, Youngkin said, framing the primaries as a referendum on the partys direction. He urged a broad coalition to resist this trend, insisting, I think what it clearly demonstrates is that Americans have to stand together in order to battle against this socialist movement not just Republicans, but Republicans, independents, and a lot of Democrats.
Youngkin stressed that the agenda being advanced by these candidates is not merely liberal, but fundamentally hostile to the nations founding principles. This socialist movement is real. Listen, they stand for things that are un-American truly un-American, he said, underscoring his view that the stakes extend far beyond routine partisan disputes.
He cited a litany of radical proposals he says are being embraced by socialist Democrats, including abolishing the police, defunding the Pentagon, granting universal amnesty to illegal aliens, and even dismantling core constitutional institutions such as the U.S. Senate and the Presidency. I mean, this is crazy stuff, Youngkin summarized, adding that these ideas are not theoretical but what is going to be on the ballot.
And so we have to have this moment as Americans to stand together and fight against socialism, and stand for the values that we hold dear, he continued, calling for voters to rally around traditional American ideals of law and order, national defense, and constitutional governance. When Fox Business host Stuart Varney pressed him on how Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries might respond to El-Sayed and other socialist primary winners, Youngkin suggested party leaders are being dragged along by an increasingly radical base.
He pointed to Virginia as a warning of what happens when Democrats campaign as centrists but govern from the left. Theres no such thing as a moderate Democrat anymore, because the socialist wing of the Democrat Party has taken over, Youngkin said, arguing that the partys internal dynamics make genuine moderation impossible.
Abigail Spanberger ran as a moderate, Youngkin said of the Democrat who succeeded him in Richmond after he was term-limited under the Virginia Constitution. The day that she was inaugurated, she moved way left. And thats what well see out of all the Democrats, because there is no moderate Democrat anymore.
Spanberger has backed tighter gun control and expanded abortion access, while Democratic legislators in Virginia have pursued new tax increases, reinforcing Youngkins claim that their governing record belies their campaign rhetoric. Youngkin concluded that Democrats want power so bad, theyre willing to compromise the American values that this whole nation was founded upon, a charge that will likely sharpen the contrast between President Trumps second administration and a Democratic Party increasingly defined by its socialist wing.
