Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, announced that she will oppose President Donald Trumps nominee Todd Blanche for attorney general, tightening an already narrow path to confirmation for the embattled pick.
According to Just The News, Murkowskis defection aligns her with Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who has also come out against Blanche. With Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., still sidelined by medical issues and Democrats expected to vote in lockstep against the nominee, it would take only one additional Republican defection to sink the nomination, NBC News reported.
Murkowski argued that the post must be filled by an attorney general who will check the worst impulses of the administration, adding that she does not believe Blanche fits that standard. She further voiced unease over what she described as the growing weaponization of the Justice Department, which she said has become more frequent under the Trump administration.
The Alaska senator cited the Justice Departments handling of the release of files tied to the investigation of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as an example of her concerns. She also questioned Blanches credibility on spending restraint, saying she doubted the $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund will not be resurrected in the future, despite Blanche's assurances it's dead.
For conservatives who have long demanded a Justice Department insulated from partisan abuse, Murkowskis stance underscores a deepening rift over how best to restore public trust in federal law enforcement. Her opposition raises the stakes for Senate Republicans, who must now decide whether to rally behind the Presidents choice or risk handing Democrats a political victory on one of the most consequential appointments in the administration.
