Retired engineer Thomas J. Tom Smith captured 50.4% of the vote in Michigans Eighth Congressional District Republican primary, while Trump-endorsed Navy veteran and law enforcement officer Amir Hassan trailed far behind at 33.2%, with more than 95% of ballots counted, according to the Associated Press. As reported by the Daily Caller, Smith had formally exited the race on July 17, remained on the ballot, and publicly endorsed fellow engineer Al Lemmo, who ultimately finished a distant third with just 16.4% of the vote.
Smiths upset was sweeping rather than narrow, as he carried every county in the district, according to The New York Times, despite having effectively ceased active campaigning. Lemmo, the beneficiary of Smiths endorsement, failed to gain traction with voters, suggesting that name recognition and ballot presence still outweighed late-race maneuvering among Republican primary voters.

I am announcing that today I am suspending my campaign, putting my full support behind Al Lemmo, he declared in the 15-second clip, which closed with the tagline THANK YOU, TOM SMITH!
Smiths own campaign website, which remained online, projected a message steeped in traditional conservative themes of faith, constitutionalism, and limited government. It prominently featured the slogans Guiding Michigan True North, Faith, Freedom and The Constitution, signaling a platform rooted in moral clarity and constitutional fidelity rather than personality-driven politics.

Despite his decisive win, Smith appears to have run one of the leanest campaigns in the country. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) lists no financial filings for him, and The New York Times did not even provide a headshot, underscoring how little attention the political class paid to his candidacy before Election Day.
Hassan, by contrast, was the clear favorite of the party establishment and the Trump movements institutional apparatus. His campaign raised more than $727,000 through mid-July, according to FEC records, and he enjoyed the full weight of Trumps public backing and national Republican support.

Smith will now face freshman Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet in November, setting up a contest between a little-known constitutional conservative and a well-funded moderate Democrat. McDonald Rivet ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and, as of the coverage period ending July 15, reported $4.25 million in cash on hand, according to the FEC, ensuring that national Democrats will have ample resources to defend a seat that voters have already shown they are willing to swing toward Trumps America First message.
