The Democratic Partys increasingly aggressive big tent experiment is drawing in open socialists and foreign propagandists, raising serious questions about how far the party is willing to drift from the American mainstream.
According to The Western Journal, the partys tent now comfortably shelters figures aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, including New York politician Zohran Mamdani, whose circle of allies hardly reflects moderation. Party defenders insist these are not extremists but reformers who merely seek to work through our existing structures, pointing to the D in DSA as proof of their supposed democratic instincts.
Yet in Mamdanis orbit, one associate recently crossed a line that should alarm anyone who still believes in basic political decency, let alone national security. Eric Hovagim, described by Townhall as a Democratic campaign videographer now based in Shanghai, China, publicly labeled Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk a valid military target, a remark that prompted a sharp warning from Musk.
Musks attention was drawn to the threat by The Free Press, which profiled Hovagim and cataloged a series of his inflammatory statements. The outlet reported that beyond targeting Musk, Hovagim has smeared the United States as the Fourth Reich and derided OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as a human shield.
On the specific suggestion that he was a target, Musk did not mince words, responding, If they come after me, I will come after them and finish the job. Hovagim, who appears to operate as a de facto propagandist for the Chinese Communist Party, then escalated the spectacle by posting from inside what he claimed was a Tesla facility in China.
Elon threatened to kill me, so I came to his battery factory here in China. Apparently he makes over 52% of his cars in this beautiful communist country, Hovagim wrote on X, pairing the message with an obscene gesture. The stunt was clearly designed to taunt Musk while glorifying the beautiful communist country that routinely jails dissidents and censors speech.
What should trouble Americans across the spectrum is that this is not some anonymous internet troll but an individual who has worked for one of the two major political parties in the United States. It is yet more evidence of how far Democrats have drifted from the realm of decency, tolerating voices that praise communist regimes while vilifying their own country.
Prominent cultural figures are beginning to sound the alarm about the Democrats flirtation with the DSA and its ideological fellow travelers. Television host and independent voter Mike Rowe warned on Sunday that the partys embrace of democratic socialism could prove disastrous.
He cautioned that if the DSA continues to grow in popularity, and the Democrats actually campaign on their behalf, I think itll be the largest political blunder in my lifetime. Rowe, hardly a partisan bomb-thrower, believes Democrats could still notch gains in upcoming elections, but only if they decisively separate themselves from the radicals now basking under the partys banner.
Seems to me, that this is best opportunity Democrats will ever have to make some kind of reasonable appeal to Independents, and those not on board with this administration, he said. This is a chance to affirmatively distance themselves from an ideology that has caused more human suffering than any other scheme dreamt up by man. And yet, they have not.
Hovagims rhetoric, his praise of communist China, and his targeting of an American entrepreneur offer Democrats precisely the test case Rowe describes. They can either denounce this lunacy and draw a bright line against the CCP and socialism, or they can continue to indulge a fringe that openly disdains American values.
You do not need to be a political strategist to see which path a serious, responsible party would choose. For a Democratic Party that has been veering away from sanity for years, the question now is whether it still has the willor the desireto turn back toward the principles of liberty, limited government, and respect for those who build and innovate rather than those who cheer on authoritarian regimes.
