A senior House conservative is warning that the Democratic Party is being dragged so far left by its socialist wing that voters will recoil in November.
House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., told Fox News Digital he still believes Republicans can hold their paper-thin House majority because the Democrats radical flank will alarm mainstream Americans as the election approaches. According to Fox News, Harris argued that the growing influence of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and its allies is exposing an ideological shift that party leaders are reluctant to admit publicly. The Democrat party is now being infiltrated with truly communist elements. I think Americans are going to realize that the Democrats are truly the crazy party now, and the country can't tolerate that, Harris said. So I think that improves our chances in November.
Republicans are defending a narrow edge in the House as the midterm campaign intensifies, with lawmakers fanning out across their districts to make the case for continued GOP control during the final stretch of President Donald Trump's term. They are betting that a clear contrast with an increasingly hard-left Democratic Party will resonate with voters who favor limited government and free-market principles.
On the trail, Republicans are already highlighting a string of primary victories by DSA-backed candidates as evidence of the Democrats leftward lurch. Those wins, they argue, show that the partys activist base is embracing policies that resemble state control rather than individual liberty.
New York City has become a prime example, where two House hopefuls supported by Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani toppled incumbent progressive Democrats and are now heavily favored in November. A third open House contest in the city also saw a Mamdani-backed contender defeat an establishment-aligned Democrat, underscoring the clout of the socialist faction.
I think Mr. Mamdani in New York says exactly where the party is. He wants government-run everything. That's called communism. That's way beyond socialism. That's communism, Harris said. For conservatives, that agenda is not merely misguided policy but a direct challenge to the American tradition of private enterprise and local control.
Harris warned that such ideas mirror the command economies of authoritarian regimes. When you want to control for instance, you want have the grocery stores run by the government that's the way it is in Russia. That's is the way is in China. That's it the way in communist-controlled countries. And anybody who's interested in that, ought to look back at history and see how that works out." While Harris sits in a secure Republican district after Maryland Democrats abandoned a redistricting push against him, he is betting that voters nationwide will reject a Democratic Party increasingly defined by socialist activists rather than centrist pragmatists.
