California Gov. Gavin Newsom has quietly turned to one of Washingtons most politically connected defense attorneys as a federal criminal investigation circles his family and business interests.
According to RedState, Newsom confirmed during an unrelated press conference that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, have hired Abbe Lowell, the high-powered lawyer who has represented Hunter Biden and New York Attorney General Letitia James, among other prominent Democrats. Sacramento political journalist Ashley Zavala previously reported that sources told her earlier this month that Newsom had retained Lowell, but noted that Lowell's firm has not responded to the station's "repeated request for comment since July 9."
Newsom announced in mid-June that he and his wife were the targets of a federal criminal probe and complained that their friends, family, and former employees were being door?knocked by federal investigators and questioned about the Newsoms' business interests and transactions. What he did not emphasize is that many of those friends and family are reportedly intertwined with his business operations, including his sister, who runs Plumpjack, and his best friend's wife, who manages his blind trust.
Despite the governors public claims of investigative pressure, he acknowledged Tuesday that neither he nor his wife has received subpoenas or been directly contacted by federal authorities. That gap between rhetoric and reality will likely fuel further scrutiny from critics who see a pattern of Democrat officials portraying themselves as victims while lawyering up with elite counsel.
The choice of Lowell, who helped navigate Hunter Bidens legal morass, underscores how seriously Newsom appears to be taking the probe and how deeply embedded he is within the same political-legal network that has shielded other high-profile Democrats.
