Michelle Obama may have traded the East Room for Hollywood soundstages, but her approach to political opponents appears as hard-edged as ever.
Now firmly ensconced in the entertainment industry, the former first lady co-leads the production company Higher Ground with her husband, former President Barack Obama. According to Western Journal, her latest venture has drawn scrutiny not for its creative content, but for what appears to be a politically motivated blacklist aimed at the wife of a member of President Donald Trumps Cabinet.
The controversy centers on a new seven-part sketch series, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, created with comedian Larry David and launched on June 26. The project, pitched as a comedic take on the nations 250th birthday, has instead become a case study in ideological intolerance, with Michelle Obama reportedly intervening to keep actress Cheryl Hines off the cast.
Hines, best known for playing Larry Davids wife on the long-running HBO hit Curb Your Enthusiasm, has a professional relationship with David stretching back decades. Yet, as reported by the U.K.s Daily Mail, that history counted for little once Michelle Obama allegedly commanded that Kennedys wife be banned from the cast because shes now all MAGA, all the time, a reference to Hines marriage to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the Trump administration.
The Daily Mail, citing unnamed sources close to the show, described a deliberate effort to exclude Hines from any involvement with the Higher Ground project. And Hines public willingness to step into the political fray alongside her husband including a combative appearance on ABCs The View last year appears to have only hardened the resolve of those determined to keep her out.
Nonetheless, the actress was reportedly blindsided by the decision and took it personally. The Daily Mail quoted an insider as saying, Cheryl felt terribly hurt and emotionally injured because she had worked so closely with Larry for the entire 12 seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm and they had become like bosom buddies.
The same insider added that Hines had genuinely believed her past collaboration with David would transcend partisan divides. Cheryls dream was to work with Larry again and be part of the cast of the new show. She firmly believed that the staunch anti-Trumper could put aside his negative political views about MAGA and Kennedy.
Instead, the source claimed, David deferred to his powerful producing partner. But banning Cheryl was a command from Michelle that Larry could not go against, even if he had wanted to, for old times sake, and mend their past close ties. He always respected her as an actress. But Michelles the boss. And you dont cross the boss, especially a powerful anti-MAGA force like Michelle.
If the reporting is accurate, Hines may be one of the only notable Curb Your Enthusiasm alumni not invited to the new series. The Daily Mail, citing Variety, noted that numerous veterans of the HBO show are involved, along with comedian Jerry Seinfeld, Davids longtime collaborator and co-creator of Seinfeld.
The project even features an on-camera appearance by Barack Obama, underscoring just how closely the former first couple is tied to the production. Yet when some production staffers reportedly floated Hines name, the reaction attributed to Michelle Obama was anything but measured or inclusive.
But when Cheryls name was brought up to join the cast by some of the production people who knew and liked her from Curb, Michelle went absolutely ballistic, one insider said, according to the Daily Mail. The same source quoted Michelle Obama as declaring, We cannot and will not have that woman on this show. Shes not one of us.
The irony is difficult to miss, given that the Obamas company is named Higher Ground, a clear echo of Michelle Obamas famous 2016 Democratic National Convention line, When they go low, we go high. For conservatives who have long suspected that such rhetoric was more branding than belief, the reported treatment of Hines will only reinforce the perception that higher ground is reserved for ideological allies.
Another source told the Daily Mail that the animus was rooted squarely in politics, not performance. Michelle felt that Cheryl wasnt any great shakes as an actress, but mainly she felt she was disgustingly all MAGA because she was married to Bobby Kennedy Jr., whom she described as a turncoat to the Democratic party and a verifiable whack job as Trumps Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The same source did not mince words in describing the former first ladys mindset. Clearly, Michelles a victim of what they call Trump Derangement Syndrome, because her true feelings surfaced in her clear-cut rejection of Cheryl. It had nothing to do with Cheryl as an award-winning actress, but rather her supposed politics because of her marriage to Kennedy and being part of Trumps inner circle of supporters.
For all the drama behind the scenes, it is not obvious that Hines missed out on a cultural milestone. Early critical reaction to Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness has been tepid, with some reviewers suggesting the show struggles to find its footing despite its star power and political pedigree.
Chicago-based critic Richard Roeper, perhaps influenced by the Obamas hometown ties, reportedly called the series pretty, pretty, pretty funny. That faint praise, however, stands in contrast to a notably harsher assessment from The Hollywood Reporter.
That outlet effectively panned the show, concluding a lengthy review with a line that captured its overall disappointment. Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness isnt smooth or steady either, but in another 250 years, give or take, I should be ready for another season.
The Daily Mail noted that it had contacted Michelle Obamas representatives for comment on the allegations regarding Hines exclusion. As of the reports publication, there was no indication that the former first lady or Higher Ground had offered any public explanation or denial.
For many on the right, the episode will be seen as further evidence that the lefts calls for tolerance and inclusion often evaporate when confronted with anyone associated with Trump or the broader MAGA movement. At the same time, it raises a broader question about the cultural power wielded by former political figures who now control major media platforms, and how that power can be used to punish dissenting views.
Whether the story prompts any introspection in Hollywood or among Democratic elites remains doubtful, but it does clarify one thing. In the world Michelle Obama now inhabits, the price of being not one of us appears to be professional exile and no amount of past loyalty, friendship, or artistic merit is enough to buy a ticket back in.
