ABC is mobilizing viewers to pressure federal regulators as the Biden-era Federal Communications Commission intensifies its scrutiny of the long-running daytime talk show The View."
According to WND, the network on Monday began airing a promotional spot urging audiences to oppose the FCCs investigation, directing them via QR code to the agencys public comment portal, as reported by the New York Times. The campaign message declares, The View has welcomed your favorite guests for nearly 30 years. Now the FCC wants to control who is allowed the appear on the show. Tell the FCC to let the viewers decide, according to the outlet.
The ad is scheduled to run throughout the day in major markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston and Fresno, according to the New York Times. The FCC did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundations requests for comment, leaving unanswered how far regulators intend to push their oversight of political content.
In February, the FCC opened a probe into whether The View violated equal-time rules for political candidates after airing an appearance by Democratic Texas Senate hopeful James Talarico. The agency is also examining the diversity, equity and inclusion policies of ABCs parent company, Disney, according to the Wall Street Journal, a move that raises broader questions about federal intrusion into corporate speech and hiring practices.
FCC Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel signaled skepticism about the shows status in a September podcast, stating, I would assume you could make the argument that The View is a bona fide news show, but Im not so sure about that. She continued, And I think its worthwhile to have the FCC look into whether The View and some of the programs that you have still qualify as bona fide news programs and therefore exempt from the equal opportunity regime that Congress has put in place, underscoring a regulatory posture that many conservatives fear could chill political expression and tighten government control over broadcast content.
