Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnells office has announced that the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican will remain sidelined from floor votes this week as he continues recovering from his latest hospitalization.
According to Gateway Pundit, McConnell was rushed to the hospital early Sunday and was described by his spokesman as receiving excellent care, though no specific diagnosis has been disclosed. His office later confirmed that the veteran lawmaker will not participate in Senate votes, a development that again raises questions about the advanced age and health of many in the nations political class.
Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week, McConnells office stated, emphasizing that he remains engaged behind the scenes despite his absence from the chamber. This marks the second time in recent months that McConnell has required hospitalization, underscoring a pattern of health concerns that would draw far more scrutiny were he not a powerful fixture of the Washington establishment.
Earlier this year, McConnell was admitted with flu-like symptoms after seeking medical attention in an abundance of caution, after experiencing flu-like symptoms over the weekend, a spokesperson said in February. His prognosis is positive and he is grateful for the excellent care he is receiving. He is in regular contact with his staff and looks forward to returning to Senate business, the spokesperson added, attempting to reassure constituents and colleagues.
McConnell has long dealt with lingering physical challenges, including a weakened leg stemming from childhood polio, and last October he took a nasty fall in the Russell basement and had to be helped up. He has also suffered from highly publicized freezing episodes, fueling renewed debate over whether Americas leadership class should face stricter expectations on fitness and transparency as they wield power over the lives and liberties of millions.
