Trump Heads To Capitol Hill In High-Stakes Push For GOP Election Integrity Bill

President Donald Trump is set to press Senate Republicans on the SAVE America Act during a closed-door luncheon Wednesday, at the invitation of Sen.

Rick Scott of Florida.

According to The Daily Signal, Scott confirmed the meeting in an interview with Fox News Kayleigh McEnany, underscoring the urgency conservatives feel about restoring election integrity and protecting children from radical gender ideology. He wants, we all want to get the SAVE America Act done, Scott told McEnany. Ive invited him to lunch on Wednesday to meet with Republican senators.

The SAVE America Act would require photo identification and proof of citizenship in federal elections, end universal vote-by-mail, and compel local governments to routinely clean up voter rolls. It would also bar men from competing in womens sports and outlaw transgender medical procedures for minors, reflecting a growing backlash against progressive social policies.

Scott argued that the Senate should move the legislation in parts if necessary to overcome procedural and political roadblocks. Lets do a vote just on voter ID, he said. Lets do a vote on just, you have to be American to vote, maybe just to share voter rolls. Weve got to get this done.

He insisted the Senate remain in Washington until meaningful action is taken on election security. We all need to figure out how come together, he said. If we have to stay in D.C. to get it done, lets stay in D.C. to get this done. This is important. Secure these elections.

Scott wants GOP senators to coordinate directly with the president on a path forward, even as narrow margins and internal divisions complicate the effort. Although the act is a central White House priority, four Senate Republicans recently sided with Democrats to block voter ID from a reconciliation package, leaving conservatives frustrated.

As a result, some lawmakers warn that abolishing the filibuster may be the only remaining route, a step Senate Majority Leader John Thune has consistently resisted. Lets talk about how we get it done. What can he do? What can we do? But weve got to get the SAVE America Act passed, Scott said.

President Trump last week urged Republicans to tie the measure to the renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, leveraging must-pass legislation to force action. I think the president wants to add SAVE America to pretty much everything, Thune told reporters. But that, obviously, is not realistic to get the FISA bill done. And we want to get the FISA bill done.
