A drive-by shooting on Chicagos South Side left at least a dozen people wounded after police said gunmen in an SUV opened fire on a crowd gathered along a neighborhood street before speeding away.
According to The Post Millennial, President Donald Trump weighed in on the spiraling violence Friday night, sharply criticizing Illinois Democratic leadership for refusing federal assistance. Why isnt Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!! D.C. went from one of the worst, to one of the safest cities in the U.S," he wrote, underscoring a long-standing conservative argument that tough-on-crime policies and federal support can restore order where progressive governance has failed.
Authorities reported that the victims included eight men and four women, ranging in age from 17 to 47, with two men listed in critical condition. One of those men suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh, while others were transported to four separate hospitals for treatment.
Officers initially responded to what was believed to be a single shooting victim, only to discover a woman with two gunshot wounds to her back and a man with four graze wounds, both later described as in fair condition. Another male victim reported being injured but declined medical treatment, a reminder of how routine such violence has become in some urban neighborhoods.
Detectives continue to investigate the ambush-style attack, and police said no arrests have yet been made. Officials added that further information was not immediately available, a familiar refrain in a city where clearance rates lag and residents are left waiting for justice.
Chicago police also disclosed that at least 21 people have been shot citywide since Friday evening, including four who were killed, as the city marked Juneteenth weekend. Earlier Friday, former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama welcomed visitors to his presidential center on the South Side, even as the surrounding community continues to grapple with the consequences of lenient crime policies and chronic public-safety failures.
