A disturbing new analysis suggests that a rising wave of anti-Christian extremism and an emerging assassination culture may have helped inspire a recent plot to murder Erika Kirk, widow of Charlie Kirk and now the head of Turning Point USA, amid a broader surge in threats against public officials.
According to The Post Millennial, 26-year-old Jacob Wenske was charged in late May with one count of making a terroristic threat involving public fear of serious bodily injury or public disruption, after allegedly planning to bomb a Turning Point USA event where Kirk was scheduled to deliver the keynote address. Police records indicate that Wenske emailed the organization stating he was targeting Kirk and other Christian nationalists, and investigators say he also posted multiple threats on social media in the lead-up to the planned attack, according to Fox News.
The alleged plot against Kirk comes as threats against elected officials and other political figures have reached unprecedented levels in the United States. The US Capitol Police Threat Assessment reported a 58 percent increase in threats against members of Congress from 2024 to 2025, underscoring a climate in which political violence is increasingly normalized rather than condemned.
Researchers at the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI), a lab that tracks how radical ideologies spread online, examined the threats against Kirk and the broader permission structure that appears to embolden would-be attackers. What we're seeing is a massive influx of foreign malign influence that is truly shaping the Western world right now, particularly through social media, NCRI intelligence analyst Travis Hawley told the outlet, warning that What you could call our digital diet is really shaping how people see ourselves, our values, our country, and even our history."
Hawley further cautioned that hostile actors are deliberately stoking unrest and violence in the United States. "And there are many countries, organizations, and wealthy individuals, whether it's [Neville Roy] Singham in China, who are really pushing or putting their thumb on the scale, trying to push us and accelerate us into violence, dystopian even, and a civil unrest type of environment," he added, noting, "This is really concerning and really showing how democracy actually has a weakness if it is not protected."
The targeting of Erika Kirk comes just nine months after her husband was assassinated on the campus of Utah Valley University, a killing that shocked conservatives nationwide. Tyler Robinson has been charged with murder in that case and is facing the death penalty, highlighting how lethal the climate has become for prominent Christian and conservative leaders.
The latest plot also follows the assassination of the UnitedHealthcare CEO, allegedly carried out by Luigi Mangione, whose case has been embraced by radical left-wing activists. Mangiones legal defense fund has reportedly raised more than $1.5 million, a show of support that critics say reflects a dangerous romanticization of political violence on the left.
NCRI researchers describe the permission structure as a cultural and digital environment that gives individuals moral cover to commit acts of violence that would once have been unthinkable in a civilized society. A 2025 NCRI study found that 38 percent of US adults considered it somewhat justified to murder President Donald Trump, and among those identifying as left of center, that number climbed to a staggering 55 percent, raising urgent questions about how a free society can defend both open discourse and the basic safety of its leaders.
